Group Discussion

FOCUS GROUP (20 MINUTES)

What is the purpose of this study?

This study aims to identify the factors that influence antibiotic-related decision-making in critically unwell patients.

Am I eligible to get involved?

Yes, if you are a doctor involved in the care of critically unwell patients.

What does it involve?

The focus group will involve verbally working 4 clinical simulated vignettes (the same cases from the online survey). This discussion will be audio-recorded and anonymously transcribed. This will take place virtually and involve up to 6 other participants. We anticipate the focus group will take 30 minutes.

What does participation in the focus group add?

Despite using the same clinical vignettes, the focus group will generate a richer discussion regarding decision-making and its influencing factors. The structure for the focus group will be flexible and likely to also generate discussions on point-of-care tests (POCTs), antibiotic stewardship, and risk-aversion behaviour in clinicians. It also ensures that reasonings not provided within the survey are identified.

Why should I get involved?

If you chose to participate in this study, you will have the opportunity to get involved in research that aims to positively influence antibiotic stewardship whilst simultaneously gaining insight into the influences on your own decision-making. We hope that working through these cases would be enjoyable allowing a safe controlled environment to work through authentic cases. Finally, you will have the option to join our 'Why Stop?' consortium, in which we hope that we can provide you recognition in any published work as a contributing author.
